Piecing together Bay man’s death

Police are continuing to try to piece together the last movements of a Bay of Plenty man whose body was found in Otamatea Stream in Rotorua.

Since releasing Richard Hoani Herekiuha details publicly on Thursday, a small amount of information has been received from the public by phone and social media from people who use the track or believe they may have seen the 43-year-old.

The body of Richard Herekiuha was found in a Rotorua stream earlier this week.

At this stage the last confirmed sighting remains Tuesday, May 19, the day he was also captured on CCTV in a local supermarket.

Police have received information from friends of Richard that he was in the Ford Block area on Wednesday, May 20, but the team is working to confirm the timings.

Detective Senior Sergeant Zane Smith says: 'Even if we can confirm the sighting by friends on the Wednesday it still leaves us with a gap of five days between those friends seeing him and the discovery of Richard in the stream.

'Any information no matter how small or irrelevant it may seem will help us to narrow that gap and draw some definitive conclusions about the circumstances in which he died.”

If anyone has any information that might assist Police they are asked to contact Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
