Connor closer to black jersey

Luka Connor is one trial away from forcing her way into possible selection into the New Zealand Black Ferns squad.

This weekend 45 women nationwide will take part in the final in Palmerston North, one last chance to impress coach Greg Smith ahead of next month's Women's Rugby Super Series.

Following the trial the squad will be whittled down to 26 players will be named on Friday 5 June for the Women's Rugby Super Series in Canada, where the Black Ferns will take on Canada, USA and England in late June - early July.

After impressing at the first trial earlier this month Connor, one of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's first contracted women, gets a chance to break into the national squad after leaving school just last year.

Connor, a former Opotiki College student, led the college to successive Baywide secondary school sevens crowns as well as the Bay's 2014 secondary school first XV title.

She played for Waikite in last year's Bayfair Baywide Women's division.

'I am feeling pretty confident. I just need to carry on doing what I am doing again this weekend to try and prove myself. But it is going to be a challenge, with a number of big names in their already, says the loose forward.

'It is a great opportunity and I intend to give it my all this weekend. A massive thank you to Levon, Keith, the Union and my family who have been supporting me 100 per cent, it all makes this opportunity possible and is great to have their support.”

Connor and fellow Bay teammate Hana Tapiata were both identified as potential Black Ferns in 2014 and are currently part of the National Performance Black Ferns Squad after strong performances for the Bay of Plenty Volcanix in the Women's Provincial Championship.

They are Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's first contracted Women's Rugby players, as of the beginning of this year.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union player development manager Kyle McLean says Connor is a real talent in the women's game, with this weekend a chance for her to push for Black Ferns selection.

'It will also be a great opportunity to learn and develop, adds McLean.

'She has trained really hard with our trainer Levon Grimmer so far this year. She has made massive strides with her strength and conditioning, so now she will need to impress on and off the field.”

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union chief executive Mike Roger says the union is excited about Connor's selection to trial for the Black Ferns, in what is a great reward for her hard work in the High Performance Program.

Following the naming of June 5, the team will assemble in Auckland on June 18 and depart four days later for the Canada Women's Rugby Super Series.
