Te Akau Ki continue streak

Te Akau Ki Primary are on to something special after winning the EastPack Baywide Rippa Rugby World Cup for the second year running.

The 8-1 victory over Omanu School in the year five and six grade final also sees the school heading back to Wellington to represent Bay of Plenty at the national tournament in September.

In 2014 they won bronze after beating Manawatu's Riverdale School 40-10.

Held in Paengaroa this week, the finals day, which featured the top 12 teams from throughout the region in year three and four grades as well as five and six, followed three sub-region competitions earlier this month.

This year more than 1500 kids have been involved in the tournaments – a total of 152 teams from 76 schools.

Te Akau Ki Papamoa coach Tane Bennett says the school is 'stoked and elated” with the result.

'It's two years in a row for us as a school to bring our year fives and sixes through to win this championship,” says Tane. 'We have started something special and we now hope to continue it.

'The Bay of Plenty is full of talent and we have noticed the step up in the level of rippa rugby between the Western Bay of Plenty tournament and the Baywide.”

In the years three and four grade it was Greenpark School who came up trumps, beating Central Bay of Plenty qualifier Raumata 8-3.

'It is great we have kids playing rugby for the first time,” says Greenpark coach Darren Leef. 'It is also awesome to see the girls involved.

'It was a great win for Greenpark. I think it is only the second time we have won a Baywide rippa rugby championship.

'We had a little star in our team, Kele Lasaqa. He will definitely be a name to watch out for in the future. He was our go-to guy, but had great support from the others too.”

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union junior rugby development officer Mark Roberts says the combination of good weather, great referees and an awesome attitude from players, parents, supporters and coaches made it a day to remember.

'It has been the best attitude I have seen at a tournament to date,” admits Mark.
