Papamoa’s tsunami bridge work

Papamoa is set to receive two more tsunami evacuation bridges as Tauranga City Council looks to enhance evacuation routes in the event of severe flooding.

The construction of the bridges will begin next week.

One will be located across the stormwater pond between Bermuda Drive and Santa Barbara Drive.

The other will be housed across the Maranui Swale near the end of Evansbel Place.

The Bermuda Drive bridge construction will require the walkway along the reserve to be closed at times.

The two bridges will join the existing bridges in Calypso Drive and Shaun Close, constructed to ensure there is a crossing point around every 500 metres over the Papamoa main stormwater drain.

The previous two are three metres wide, allowing enough space for pedestrians and cyclists, but not vehicles.

They provide access over the drain that lies parallel to the East Papamoa residential development.

Council have apologised in advance for any inconvenience the bridge works may cause.

Will these bridges really, help and save lives? Or are they being built just so council can be seen to be doing something?
