Weather set to deteriorate

Warmer temperatures and rain are expected to hit the Bay of Plenty this weekend.

A high pressure system is currently sitting over the region bringing the clear, blue skies that can be seen today over the region.

But MetService meteorologist Emma Blades says unfortunately, the trend over the weekend is that the weather is going to deteriorate.

She advises people to plan their activities and travels for pending rain this weekend.

'Friday is looking to be quite nice with light winds,” says Emma. 'But going through to Saturday, we are going to have some north-easterlies pick up and there might be a chance of the odd shower.

'Going through to Sunday, the clouds are going to increase and there will be some possible rain or drizzle coming through. By Monday, I'm afraid its rain.”

A front passing through the region is being blamed for the bad weather as it slowly makes its way up the country.

'We have a high pressure system sitting over us at the moment,” adds Emma, 'which is why we have these beautiful blue, clear skies. It's also bringing the colder temperatures.

'As the front moves up and brings the rain and stronger winds, the temperatures will creep up a little bit.”

As the weekend progresses, Emma says daytime temperatures may creep up to 17 or 18 degrees as opposed to the low temperatures being experienced at the moment.

'Also, night time minimums will pick up,” she says.

'It just means it is going to be quite wet going through to Monday.”
