Bay team are top dogs

The Bay's Senior Constable Dave Robison and his canine sidekick Isaac now hold the national patrol team title after shining at the Police Dog and Detector Dog Championships.

The Whakatane-based delta team won the title after three days of competition.

The duo underwent a number of demanding tests after being selected from regional trials.

'Tauranga-based handler Senior Constable James Muir also competed with his dog Eli and Senior Constable Phillip (Tiny) Taylor and dog Murphy competed for the narcotics detection title,” say police.

'Although they didn't win their categories, it was still a great effort on their part being nationally selected.”

Dave and Isaac beat out a dozen police patrol dog teams for the national honours.

The hard-working canines from Police, Customs, Corrections and Aviation Security were being tested on tracking, agility, obedience, searching, and detection capabilities in a series of demanding challenges at locations in the Hutt Valley, Wellington and southern Wairarapa.

The dogs and their handlers were selected from regional trials, and each team went into the nationals with a set of points.
