Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says firefighters had been called to help St John ambulance staff at the scene, just off Marine Parade.

”He has fallen on to some rocks but it is not known how this happened,” confirms Jaron. 'We were just called to assist ambulance to extricate him.”

A Te Puke St John spokesperson says the man suffered possible head injuries as a result of the fall.

He was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service posted a statement soon after the incident that read: 'Once again, MMLS called out to assist St Johns and NZ Fire Service with an incident down by Castle Rock.

'Thanks to SLSNZ Eastern Region Sport Manager, Mark Inglis, who was here for a meeting and was invaluable in helping our response.”

Surf Life Saving Eastern Region sport manager Mark Inglis says lifeguards helped extricate the man but wouldn't comment any further on the incident.
