The luxury liner Oceania's Insignia was scheduled to arrive at 8am today, before departing at 6pm the same day. The cruise ship can carry 684 passenger and 400 staff.

A Port of Tauranga Spokesperson confirmed the cruise ship was turned away due to high winds. He says it has not been rescheduled to berth at Mount Maunganui after being turned away.

On its arrival, the Insignia would have been the 79th and final cruise ship out of a scheduled 83 since last October – an itinerary that was readjusted due to weather conditions, which has brought ship numbers down 1.6 per cent on the 2013/14 season.

A severe weather watch is currently in place for Western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua.

MetService has put in place a severe weather watch for Western Bay of Plenty during Monday, with a possibility of severe southwest gales.

I didn't think a bit of wind would bother a cruise ship? What do they do if it gets windy at sea?
