How do you heat your home?

With the drop in temperatures people will be pulling out the heaters, putting extra blankets on the beds or bedding down next to a cosy fire.

There are plenty of tips for keeping warm this winter including wearing extra clothing, trimming trees that block the sun to using dry wood.

There have also been moves to ban some forms of heating, with the Rotorua District Council moving to ban indoor open fires.

There is also a call to ban gas heaters - dubbed ‘the poor man's heater'.

With all the advice in play, SunLive decided to ask members of the community how they chose to stay warm this winter.

Watch the video above to see if there is something you haven't thought of.

The council should make it compulsory to have a good heating system in every house that is build. Not have a heat recovering system what brings mostly more moister in the house than taking it out.

Home Heating

If you own the house and live in it,surely its your choice on how to heat it.We use bottled gas and costs us a maximum of $150.00 for the winter period. We put insulation in the ceiling years ago.Why should the you have to insulate your home to the same standard as Dunedin. We have a few frosts here and no snow or ice.I was born in Scotland and in the winter we used to breath on the inside of the windows to melt the ice so we knew what like a day it was outside.By the way we are both in out 70ties and not on any medication.

Can't believe we haven't followed other countries and banned unflued gas heaters they have so many negative health benefits. Wood fire for me could never convince me a heater is better.

pretty simple really ...

.. put on extra clothing instead of whining about the cold and expecting some other entity to sort it out

Responsibility

I agree with 'Here we go again' comment. Take responsibility for yourselves. You own it, YOU make it comfortable. It doesn't have to cost YOU. Put extra clothing on, close your curtains earlier to keep the warmth in. What did they do in the good ole days??? Work it out for yourself. Yes the elderly can find it harder, but there shouldn't be any reason for adults with young babies to expect handouts. Get real. If you can't afford a family, then DON'T have one. Take respnosibility for your own actions. If building a home, then it's up to YOU to work out what YOU 'need' before you 'want'. YOU have it too easy. Get real & warm yourselves.
