Heavy rain forecast for Bay

A severe weather warning is in place for the Bay of Plenty with periods of heavy rain expected to hit the region.

A subtropical low over the Tasman Sea is expected to pass eastsouth over the upper East Cape during Saturday. A period of heavy rain and strong easterly winds are expected as the low passes east.

This period of heavy rain is expected to hit the bay of Plenty on Saturday afternoon and evening, from 11am to 11pm.

Between 70 to 100mm of rain is expected to accumulate, with peak intensities of 25 to 40mm/hr in locally heavy downpours, especially about northern Gisborne.

The MetService has also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Coromandel Peninsula, with an active rainband forecast to move onto the upper North Island during Saturday morning.

This will bring a burst of heavy rain to many places issued a severe weather watch.

There is moderate confidence of localised downpours of 25 to 40mm/hr with this rainband as it moves across the Coromandel Peninsula during the morning.

'Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips,” says the MetService. 'Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.”

The MetService adds: 'There is some uncertainty between models where the heaviest rain will be.”
