A 49-year-old woman has suffered serious injuries after her car left the road and crashed in the Waioeka Gorge south of Opotiki this afternoon.

The woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no other car was involved in the crash that occurred at about 2.30pm.

In its first mission, the new Rotorua based BayTrust Rescue helicopter was dispatched to the gorge shortly after the crash at about 3pm.

Pilot Ben Fry says the woman was believed to have suffered serious spinal injuries as a result of the crash.

'She was in quite a lot of pain when we picked her up,” says Ben. 'Thankfully no-one else was in the car with her at the time of the crash.”

The injured woman was then airlifted to Rotorua Hospital where she is currently in a stable condition.

The BayTrust Rescue helicopter was used due to the remote location of the accident.
