Over the past month there has been a heavy spate of thefts from motor vehicles within the Central Palmerston North area, with 60 reported already during May.

Offenders have been targeting GPS units and other technology, wallets and cash left in unattended vehicles in the CBD and inner city carparks.

The recent spate is a reminder to vehicle owners to remove valuables from vehicles when left unattended.

'Opportunistic thieves are targeting vehicles with valuables in plain sight, breaking windows, taking items in view and quickly leaving the scene,” says Constable Luke Shannon.

'Motorists using car parks within the area are urged to take valuables with them when leaving vehicles unattended and to make sure technology is not left attached to windscreens.

'Leaving these valuables in plain sight presents opportunity for thieves."

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information to assist police with their enquiries.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to Palmerston North Police on (06) 351 3600.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police also encourage the public to use the SNAP service to record serial numbers and details of valuable items.

This helps to identify and return property if located when stolen.
