Facebook post points to arson

As investigations continue into the fire which destroyed two classrooms at Rotorua Girl's High School last night, a post on Facebook has raised suspicion that the cause of the blaze may have been arson.

The post reads 'Tonight is the night to BURN DOWN GIRLS HIGH! AMEN GHEE” and received 101 likes and 114 comments on the social media site.

The post on Facebook received 101 likes.

It was posted at around the same time as the fire started in a stand-alone block at the high school on Old Taupo Road at about 1.20am.

Some 35 firefighters were called to the scene, where Ngongotaha and Mamaku Fire Brigades worked alongside their Rotorua colleagues.

After the post went live on Facebook, a conversation included the poster saying 'only two classroom caught” when asked if she had burned down the school.

Police would not go into detail when asked about the post, but said they were examining several social media posts as part of their investigation, reports Stuff.

Sergeant Andrew Lynch says police are waiting for fire safety authorities to have a look and 'based on what they tell us, we will take it from there”.

He says there are no reports of any suspicious activity around the school, but police were keeping an open mind and arson is not being ruled out.

Rotorua Girls' High School principal Ally gibbons says the fire-damaged area has been cordoned off. 'We have lost a couple of mathematics classrooms,” says Ally. 'There is a lot of damage and we are not sure of the extent yet.

'We are just devastated for the teachers and students who have lost all of their teaching resources. It's really sad.”

Police and fire safety investigators are at the scene today.
