SunLive Competition

Te Puna woman Jeanette Knudsen has co-authored a book about the changes that Christianity underwent in the 1970s at one particular Mount Maunganui church.

She wrote the book, titled Fire at the Mount, with Beverley Coad.

It explains how Mount Maunganui Baptist Church began attracting converts and new Christians during the 1970s.

“Church was exciting to go to because things were happening and you never knew what was going to happen.”

She says the church began attracting new followers because they needed boundaries.

“The church was having an impact on society. A lot of people who were becoming Christians at that time were young people who had no boundaries in their lives.”

Jeanette and Beverly first thought about writing the book 10 years ago.

“There’s not much church history in New Zealand.”

“We just thought it was a story that needed to be recorded.”

Fire at the Mount is available at Christian book shops in Tauranga.
