SunLive CompetitionLearn about geology and see world class crystals, gems and fossils at the gem and mineral show next weekend, October 16 and 17 at the Tauranga Racecourse.
“Gems and minerals make a vast hobby and there will definitely be something for everyone.” The show features minerals, fossils, gemstones, gold, opals, meteorites and tektites. There will be demonstrations of jewellery-making, rock polishing and bone and rock carving. People can also bring stones and rocks they have at home that they would like identified and valued. “It’s amazing the number of people who have rocks in their home and don’t know what they are. We would love to see people bring these along to get them identified.” For kids, there will be a colouring competition and a chance to ‘guess the mineral’. “The club is interested in gaining members, especially younger ones. Gems and minerals is a hobby many older children are interested in and its great to see parents let their kids have a go at rockwork.” The show is 9am-4.30pm both days. Entry costs $5 for adults, $2 for kids and $10 for families. There will also be an auction on Saturday, October 16 from 4.30pm featuring about 70 items from greenstone and petrified woods to jasper and top-class minerals. The public is welcome and auction material will be on display during the day. SunLive has 25 family passes to the gem and mineral show to give away. Competition ResultsAngela Newton

“The show is back by public demand and we, as a club, would like to create more awareness of the value of good minerals,” says Kevin Nicholson of the Tauranga Gem and Mineral Club.
