SunLive - The Bay's news first

SunLive Competition

(Reviewed by Laura Weaser)

There is something so utterly charming about French cinema. Usually, the thought of a ‘romantic comedy’ more predictable than a Disney film wouldn’t interest me, but throw in some crazy capers, a little bit of deceit and a whole lot of beautiful French scenery and I was sold.

The charming Alex and his sister run a business designed to break up relationships. They find themselves up against the clock when hired by a rich man to break up the wedding of his daughter Juliette – they only have one week to do so. To make matters worse for Alex, Juliette is beautiful, feisty and independent and in the world of the romantic comedy – that spells trouble.

Juliette is played by the unconventionally beautiful Vanessa Paradis, also known as Mrs Johnny Depp. Not just a pretty face with a fantastic wardrobe, Paradis really embodies her character with grace and elegance, combined with a geeky school girl love for Dirty Dancing.

Her on-screen Romeo, played by Romain Duris, is a refreshing take on the male comedy lead. Not quite as unattractive and awkward as Hugh Grant – in my opinion – yet not as handsome as aforementioned Johnny Depp, there is something roguish and totally likeable about his character. Watching him run around France, narrowly dodging trouble from all angles, his shenanigans made for a decent laugh.

There is nothing overly complicated about this film, but that is the best part. Being light on the script means heavy on the humour and an opportunity to have a laugh at the ridiculous lengths men and women will go to for love.

Heartbreaker is screening at Rialto Tauranga.
