SunLive CompetitionGenerational difference is the talking point for a first time act at the 2011 New Zealand International Comedy Festival. Cold Duck and Tamagotchis is a show conceived by comedians John Carr and Mount Maunganui man Tom Furniss, opening at the festival on April 30 and running through until May 7.
“We met at the Raw Comedy Quest in the beginners section and for some reason I got on with him better than everyone else,” says Tom. “He is 35 years older than me. The tamagotchi is an icon from my generation and Montana Cold Duck was a drink that his generation used to get rowdy on. It is just about me taking the piss of him because he is older and him coming back at me like a wise old man.” Born and raised in Mount Maunganui, 22-year-old Tom moved to Auckland last year when he began to dabble in the world of stand-up comedy. “I didn’t know anyone, so I was looking for a hobby and activity to meet some people and I went down to the comedy club and it just kind of snowballed from there. I got addicted to it.” Tom describes his routine as “surreal”, with a focus more on originality that one-liners. “I don’t rely on jokes. I think there is something more in comedy than telling a joke that anyone could recite to friends. I like to feel there is no one else that can say the way I am or thinking it.” Win: A prize for four people to go to the 2011 New Zealand International Comedy Festival in Auckland with SunLive.
