SunLive Competition

The Tauranga Musica is kicking off its 2011 season with a youthful approach and is set to prove classical music is not something to be scared of.

The Antipodes String Trio is the first of six acts to perform throughout the year, playing on March 20 at Tauranga Park Auditorium. The act is described as a dynamic ensemble of young players.

New Zealand string players’ violinist Christobel Lin and violist Nicholas Hancox are joined by cellist David Requiro travelling over from the United States. Their programme will include Schubert, Beethoven, Dohnanyi and Handel.

Musica chairman Barry Ward says they are privileged to have them come and play as they don’t get many young string trios. He says a lot of people are scared of classical musical, but it is really “a lot of fun”.

“We began about 13 years ago when Tauranga was a cultural desert for classical music. Now we have six or seven professional musicians a year.”

While the layout of Musica’s programme hasn’t changed, the group is still committed to bringing a diverse range of musical talents to Tauranga for an interesting programme.
