SunLive CompetitionTheatre organ enthusiasts are to be treated to a performance by legendary British player Len Rawle on March 13. Born in Tonypandy, South Wales, Len began his musical education at the age of four. His family are credited with helping ‘save’ more than 40 theatre organs and Len grew up with one in his family home. He continued his education at London College of Music in Cardiff, and later bought the largest Wurlitzer in Europe.
Louise Creighton from the Tauranga Organ Society says they are privileged to have Len returning to New Zealand. “He is extremely well known, not just as a performer in theatre and electronic organs, but in the restoration of theatre organs which earned him the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.” Louise says she is unsure what Len will be playing because “he finds every organ is a little bit different and is particular about what he plays”. The Tauranga Wurlitzer organ resides in Baycourt Theatre and is smaller than some around the world. Boasting 1000 pipes, the ‘unit orchestra’ will allow Len to provide tunes from marches and pop tunes to old favourites in the organ players circle. Len will be joined in concert by Tauranga artist Carol Storey, who is well known throughout the area for her smooth style, which will incorporate well with the Wurlitzer. Win: Go in the draw to win one of two double passes with SunLive. Entrants must be aged 18 years or over. To enter, you must be logged in, if you are new click here to register for free!
