SunLive Competition

Local and national kickboxing talent will be showcased at the Muay Thai Mayhem 4 event at Mount Sports Centre on Saturday, March 19.

“This is the first of three shows we have planned for 2011, and the fourth in the series so far,” says kickboxing trainer and Red Dragon promotions manager Brent Maharey.

“Muay Thai is very popular in New Zealand and lots of shows are held around the country every month.

“This local show gives our fighters an opportunity to compete in their hometown and fight in front of a home crowd rather than going out of town all the time.”

The venue holds 800 people and musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Dread. Food and alcohol will be available.

There are 13 fights scheduled, including 10 amateur fights, and three main events – two of which are New Zealand female title fights. Tauranga fighter Wendy Talbot will fight a competitor from Napier and the second female title fight features competitors from Hamilton and Rotorua.
The final fight on the night is an Extreme Thai Rules bout featuring local current NZ title holder Tommy ‘The Machine Gunn’ Wright. This style of fighting uses a variety of different martial art disciplines, including ground fighting as well as stand-up fighting techniques. It’s a MMA style fight, which is popular all over the world at the moment, similar to UFC.

An after function will be held at Illuminati on the night where people will have a chance to meet the fighters and their trainers, some of which are well known internationally.
