Tauranga MP Simon Bridges was probably the last person Dame Susan Devoy expected to meet on the squash court after a decade long hiatus from the sport.
She has rarely touched a squash racquet since she retired from the sport in 1992 and Simon says he has scarcely touched a racquet at all.
Tauranga MP Simon Bridges plays ball boy for Dame Susan Devoy in an exhibition game at the A1 Homes New Zealand Squash Open at Bayfair.
A crowd of around 100 turned out at the specially built squash court inside the Bayfair Shopping Centre on Wednesday, August 12, to watch the game between Susan and Simon.
The squash court has been set up as the venue for the A1Homes New Zealand Squash Open.
Dame Susan beat Tauranga’s MP 3-0 but Simon came close to winning the second set when the score narrowed to 11-10.
Simon hit the ball out of the court four times during the game, prompting Dame Susan to remark that it was the first time a ball boy had been required in a squash game.
By the end of the game, Simon was saturated in sweat but Dame Susan did not have a drop of perspiration on her.
“For me, it was all about participation. I think my nervousness before the game was justified, but I think there were moments that were okay and Dame Susan was clearly going easy on me,” says Simon.
Dame Susan says Simon adopted quite a good tennis style during the game.
“I wanted him to look good for the crowd. It was lots of fun and it was just about finding another way to promote squash.”
Simon says Prime Minister John Key was a gun at squash in his youth and could have given the Dame a run for her money.
“If John Key was here in my place, I think the game could have been quite different,” says Simon.
