Whakatane harbour caution

Surveying of the Whakatane harbour entrance is being carried out and skippers crossing the bar are advised to use caution.
The survey vessel is a white, 5.5 metre rigid hulled inflatable that will be continually moving across the entrance on Wednesday and Thursday, stopping in places.

The vessel will display the day mark - black ball over black diamond over black ball - indicating it is restricted in its ability to manoeuvre.
The survey is to determine the depth of large rocks in the area, says Eastern Bay of Plenty Harbour Master Brian Spake.
Contact will be maintained on VHF channel 80. Skippers of boats crossing the bar are advised to indicate intentions prior to passing.
With the survey information the Whakatane District Council is going to consider its options with regard to improving the harbour.
