The competition is the world’s largest football event for children aged 10-12 with 40 teams from countries around the world participating.
Coach Paul Stewart says every country has a localised team which represents the country and this year it is the Waikato BOP team’s turn after Auckland went last time.
“It’s a really great opportunity for kids to meet footballers from all over the world,” says Paul.
He says being selected for the Danone Nations Cup creates a drive and a passion for the boys to keep going after they come home.
“It’s a cool experience and just one more step on the way to being the best players they can be.”
The squad has 14 boys, four coaches and some parents making the trip.
Paul says extreme security measures are taken there, which mean there will be no real contact between parents and children during the tournament.
“We’ll be there to support them, cheer for them and make a few mobile calls I imagine,” says Casey’s dad Andy Garner.
The four boys are currently looking for sponsorship to get them to South Africa.
