Ski lanes decisions on hold

A decision on Tauranga harbour ski lanes is looking increasingly unlikely this summer, as Environment BOP continues to put off announcing a decision.
When the regional navigation safety bylaw review hearings were held in Tauranga last August, councillors involved were confident a new bylaw would be gazetted within months.

It hasn’t happened. In Tauranga the issue is the future of the Hunters Creek and Motuhoa Island ski lanes with island residents wanting them closed.
Rumours that Hunters Creek will remain open while the Motuhoa Island ski lane will be closed were denied by Environment BOP staff last year.
When asked in October whether the Tauranga or Rotorua lakes issues were causing the delay they refused to answer.
Today the chairman of the review tribunal Malcolm Whitaker says the Rotorua Lakes ski lanes are causing problems.
“Some of the ski lanes were put in without the proper authority,” says Malcolm.
“There are some areas of Lake Rotoiti where people wanted ski lanes changed because they present a danger to swimmers. That’s all part and parcel of it.
“Being summer with the harbourmasters out on the lakes, they have realised a few more things – seen how boaties behave and have decided to wait until most of the summer’s over.
“Rather than rush to get it through they decided to let it sit for a while, while they sort out things over there.
“Plus people have been on holiday and that sort of thing. There’s tonnes of stuff happening all the time with council at the moment. It is still sitting there until they have got a bit more information.”
